Sanagan’s Meat Locker
To sum up what I have read on the internet—
Sol owned Max and Son. He was ‘son’. It was a kosher butcher shop. It had been around for ages. Sol wanted to retire. Peter bought the business. Some people pine for Sol. Some people (like me) walked by Sol’s everyday and didn’t notice. Now everyone notices Sanagan’s.
Things I have enjoyed at Sanagan’s so far :
1. One whole chicken (that I jerked & roasted)
2. Lamb, harissa and crushed fennel sausage (that ended up on a pizza)
3. Marrow bones (ended up in the dogs)
4. Sol’s old customers talking about Sol.
5. Peter & Derek

Dear Ross,
Thank you for your comment on my blogTO post on Sanagan’s.
Your photography is very gritty. And I mean that in the most complimentary way – it’s almost haunting.
I also quite enjoy Derek and Peter.

These shots are absolutely amazing. The store looks beautiful! Thank you!
I love these photos. What kind of camera are you using?
Melissa—Thank you for the kind words!
Max & Tasha—Hi.
Alia—Thanks! It was good to meet you, for those few seconds.
Corey—The magic of film!
So far I’ve tried the flank steak, the whole chicken (both roasted and for soap), the lamb shoulder and th cornish hens that they stuffed with turkey, cranberries and tied with bacon. The last one was incredible. I pair it was some kale and it was an amazing dinner.
On the list for the weekend is duck. And I too like Derek and Peter.
Love the photos.
Thanks Nancy. I’m keeping my eyes open for the “cheeseburger sausages” which sound…amazing? I am not sure if that is the right word—I will have to reserve judgment.
Seems like the perfect story / images for a newspaper about work.
Bloody great photos. See what I did there? I kill me. Or maybe you kill me first for dumb jokes and leaving you in snowland.
Regardless, a stellar bit of mini photo essayage.
P.S. Love to you and yours
Just found your site on a whim. Great images–I especially love the colors and tones of this series in particular.
